More than 90 volunteers gathered in the San Pedro Auditorium to start a morning shift of garbage collection in the riverbed of River Santa Catarina, which is situated by the auditorium.
The event took place as part of the Environmental Volunteering Program of Fundación DEACERO, who worked alongside the municipality of San Pedro Garza García, Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) and Terra Habitus (THAC) in the convocation of the volunteers participating in the shift.
A recent study made by municipal authorities and Terra Habitus states that for every kilometer of river channel there are between 10 to 15 tons of garbage, primarily plastics, textiles, metal containers and tires.
At the end of the shift, more than 100 bags filled with garbage and a weight of approximately 960 kgs were gathered in a 200m2 area.
The waste was a result of debris dumped illegally in the riverbed, organic matter produced by the natural degradation of riparian vegetation, and deterioration caused by hurricanes.
This initiative contributes to the realization of the intermunicipal project “Recovery and Regeneration of the River Santa Catarina for the City of Monterrey” propelled by Terra Habitus, along with other organizations and enterprises.
The project looks to gradually save this natural space and turn it into a public good that adds to the quality of life of the citizens.
